Technology and the Future of Education

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing education around the world. But a new OECD report called Digital Education Outlook 2026 says more technology does not always mean better learning.

The report shows both positive and negative effects of AI in education.

On the positive side, students using AI improved their short-term work by 48%. But there was a big problem. When students could not use AI anymore, they did 17% worse than students who never used AI. Researchers say this is because students did not think deeply and depended too much on technology.

AI is not just for students. It can also help teachers. A study in England tested 259 teachers who used AI to prepare lessons. AI cut their preparation time by 31%, from 81.5 minutes to 56.2 minutes a week. Most importantly, their teaching quality did not drop.

So what is the right way to use technology in class? The OECD report says AI should help teachers, not replace them. AI can do easy jobs like organizing materials, while teachers help students think critically and support their feelings.

UNESCO and UNICEF also care about this. In a charter in March 2026, they said digital learning should be available to everyone. They warned that without clear rules, technology could make rich and poor schools even more different.

As schools use AI more and more, we all agree that technology is a strong tool, but it works best when people control it. The future of education is not choosing between teachers and technology. It is about finding the right balance.

In my opinion, we should use AI as a tool, that can help us, not as a replacement for our own thinking. We need to use technology wisely and keep thinking deeply by ourselves. If we find the right balance, AI will make education better for us.
